Children’s Knitting Class

Starts Tuesday – October 23, 2012$55.00 Includes Supplies -Six 90 Minute ClassesMinimum 6 – Maximum 8Instructor:  Gayle Holeton

Gayle Holeton, calls herself an “Extreme” knitter.  Never without knitting… in a pocket or backpack, she has had some hilarious…sometimes disastrous!… knitting events on an airplane, sailboat, golf cart and mountaintop. She has been teaching children to knit in her classroom and at Dancing Coyote Camp for many years.  As an experienced educator, she believes the benefits of knitting include:

  • Improves handwriting. Knitting is a non-threatening way to develop fine motor control.
  • Increases the child’s capacity for formal computation. Like music, knitting puts numbers on the sub-conscious.
  • Enables focus and increases concentration.  Knitting has a great calming effect.
  • Children feel a sense of accomplishment and find a creative outlet.
  • It’s fun!

Children have a natural attraction to working with their hands and knitting is something once learned they can easily pick up later in life.

In this beginning class, for boys and girls ages 6 and up we will create a whimsical creature from the first piece of knitting regardless of the perfection or lack of. Cost of the class is $55.00 and includes knitting needles, yarn and finishing materials for the first project. (Parents you are going to want to frame these projects!)

We will meet Tuesdays, 3:30 to 5:00 at Cottage Yarn in Cashmere. We will learn about the different kinds of yarn available to help choose yarn for projects beyond the scope of the class.  Class participants get a 10% discount on purchases.

October 23, 30, November 6, 13, 27 & December 4
